The average age at diagnosis was 32.2 years and 62.4% were women, during an average follow-up period of 12.5 years, 13.2% or 6,596 people died compared to the controls, and total deaths in those with celiac increased by 9.7 versus 8.6 deaths per 1,000 people during the year.

A relative increase in the risk of death was observed in all age groups but was most pronounced in those diagnosed between the ages of 18 and 39.

It has been observed that individuals with celiac have a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory diseases when compared with controls.

The study concluded that “there is an increased risk of death in Siljak patients compared to the general population and is statistically significant.”
